Don’t step out in the sun beauty queen, you may tan your fair skin. WHAT!!!! you don’t trust me? Ok no problem, then hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.
“Dhoop Mein Nikala Na Karo Roop Ki Rani Gora Rang Kala Na Pad Jaye” aab yaad aaya Kuch. Yeh toh Amitabh bahut saal pehle se kehte aa rahein hain. Matlab baat mein wazan toh hain. Lo kallo baat, Amitji, how can we stay indoors all summer but aapka concern toh skin tan se hain, right. That is not a problem. We will do everything possible to maintain the life of our skin from this glaring summer heat. Ab aap kehte hain toh faltu mein bahar nahin jayenge, not even to buy beauty products for skin care but will find from our very own heart of the home, our KITCHEN.
Summer is here in full glory and now is the perfect time to flaunt beautiful summer dresses; florals & fluorescents make a comeback and jeans pants pave way for dhoti pants, palazzos and shorts. But summers also require you to pay special attention to the skin as there are countless summer skin woes including sweat, dirt and grim, sun tan, sun burn and dehydration to serious versions like blemishes, pimples and pigmentation. Summers are notorious for ruining our skin.
Till this age, we all have heard, read, seen, tried and tested the umpteen number of tips and routines for healthy skin, glowing skin, radiant skin, supple skin, bright skin, nourished skin, kareena kapoor skin, younger skin, flawless skin, ageing skin, fair skin, beautiful skin……and the list goes on ……but for all we know, that all of this zeros down to nothing but ‘Skin Care’. An average urban woman spends a good (read ….hefty) amount on skin care and cosmetics. Off the shelf beauty products have always been in demand due to their wide availability and ease of use. However, most of these products contain potentially damaging chemicals. Much to our belief and wish that our branded cosmetics work miracles for our skin we all know that natural is the way to go. SKIN CARE REQUIRES COMMITMENT NOT MIRACLE.
Skin Care, how committed are you? At the most, we manage to get time for cleansing and moisturizing on most days. But on some days, moisturizing may be tossed off the window as we have other daily routines to follow, so its such a pity our skin can wait…rather suffer.
Do you know that the largest organ of our body is our Skin? Yes that’s true, it breathes, removes impurities, helps regulate our body temperature and helps us to look and feel great. But we put our skin under a lot of pressure. We pluck, wax, shave, stretch, pierce, stain, tattoo, color, tan, sun bathe, apply layers of make-up loaded with chemicals, and take bits from here & stitch on there and the list could go on….. It’s our skin which is one of the most tell tale sign that age is happening. And like we know ‘Prevention is so much better than a cure’. So whatever you have done to your skin in the past now is the perfect time to take care of your body’s largest organ. How?
By not planning a Routine… yes you read it right. Don’t Plan a ROUTINE for Skin Care but Do Make it a HABIT. As routines are voluntary actions but habits are involuntary.
Listed below are some natural kitchen friendly remedies that are more effective and long lasting, for our ‘SKIN CARE HABIT’
STEP 1 – CLEANSING: (TWICE A DAY)
The first step is something that has been instilled in us since we were born, washing it. Removing the daily grime from our body is a great start to preventing any build up of dirt and other matter getting into our pores and clogging them up which can start an infection.
OPTION 1 CLEANSER – YOGURT & HONEY (ONCE EVERY MORNING)
Take 4 tsp of plain yogurt add 2 tsp of honey and 3 tsp of lime juice. Now mix all these ingredients well to make a thick paste. Massage this paste on your face for 2/3 minutes & then rinse with cold water.
OPTION 2 CLEANSER – RAW MILK (ONCE EVERY NIGHT)
Just before bed time wash your face and pat dry. Soak a cotton ball in raw milk and gently massage your face with this cotton. Not only does it clean your skin but also helps to get rid of blemishes and treats skin problem too.
STEP 2 – TONING (EVERYDAY)
Cleansing and toning go hand in hand. One is not complete without the other. It closes the pores which generally open up after cleaning and it removes impurities and residue left by the cleanser.
OPTION 1 TONER – ALOE ROSE TONER
Take an aloevera leaf and slit it open to extract the gel. Take a few rose petals and blend the two together in a blender. Strain the liquid in a glass jar. After proper cleaning of the skin, dab some toner on a cotton swab and gently rub the swab all over the face.
OPTION 2 TONER – MINT LEAVES
To prepare this toner, boil one and a half cup of water in a container. Add one cup of the shredded mint leaves into the boiling water. Put off the flame and then close the container with a lid. Allow the solution to cool for thirty to forty minutes. Then, filter the mint leaves from the solution. Apply this solution on your skin. The solution prepared can also be refrigerated for later use. Caution: If refrigerated, then do not use beyond four days .
STEP 3 – MOISTURIZING (EVERYDAY)
After the toning process you should take a one minute gap so that toner can penetrate into your skin and then apply moisturizer. Moisturizing helps to seal in your skins natural oils and it acts as a barrier between your skin and the environment.
OPTION 1 MOISTURIZER – ORANGE + LEMON + YOGURT
Take a tablespoon each of orange juice and lemon juice, and add it to a cup of yogurt. Now, mix this well, and apply it on your face. After 15 minutes, clean it off with lukewarm water to reveal soft and glowing skin. You can also add mashed strawberries to the mix, instead of orange juice to experience an instant splash of moisture.
OPTION 2 MOISTURIZER – GLYCERIN & ROSE WATER (ONCE EVERY NIGHT)
Thoroughly mix equal parts of glycerin and rose water (plain water will also do). Apply this solution on your skin before going to sleep. The next morning, take a lukewarm shower to rinse it off.
Apart from the everyday options mentioned above our skin also needs scrubbing and bleaching once in a while.

SOME QUICK HACKS

- Ice is another remedy you can make use of this summer. Rub a cube of ice over your face and neck first thing in the morning to help you feel cool and to also get rid of summer acne.
- Nothing works better than water. Treat yourself with fluids like fruit juices, coconut water, green tea, buttermilk or just plain water to decrease the heat level and keep the body cool and hydrated. Fluids also help to detoxify the skin and keep the skin soft, dewy and clear.
